❓❓Why Women Want to Foam Roll during their Menopausal Journey

Joint pain and body aches are some of the more common symptoms women may experience during their menopausal journey which can start as early at 35 years old.


While it may be easy to simply accept these new pains as part of the process of aging, I know from working with clients from 30-85 that foam rolling can help relieve and even postpone body aches & pains.


My client Lynne, who just celebrated her 80th birthday is living proof of the power of having a consistent practice to release tight fascia.  She was in a wheelchair about 3 years ago and was in so much pain.  She knew that was not how she wanted to spend her life.


Slowly but surely, she got out of that wheelchair and is now strutting her stuff – moving with ease and is currently on a 2-week active trip. She looks about 68 and shows no sign of slowing down.

Regular fluctuation in estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause makes our fascia susceptible to dramatic changes.


Estrogen helps maintain tissue, muscle, and bone integrity.


Fluctuation in estrogen can lead to a less elastic fascia that’s more prone to injury and pain-sensitive.


Progesterone helps relax the connective tissues.


When levels start to dip, they negatively influence your fascia.


How do we know this? A study performed on healthy female athletes showed that they were more injury-prone and had worse performance when they were on their period, when levels of estrogen and progesterone are their lowest.


Estrogen acts as a regulator of muscle energy metabolism.


A cessation of ovarian estrogen production can lead to an overall decline in muscle function and the aging of muscle tissue. 


Studies have shown that women treated with aromatase inhibitors to bring cessation to the production of estrogen, often experience musculoskeletal aching and joint pain that reduces when therapy is halted. The explanation for these findings is that a rapid drop in estrogen levels could have a toll on your fascia and thereby enhance nociception.
