For years I tried to stop eating sugar because I thought that was my problem. And I have many women over 40 tell me the same thing.
They say, “I know I shouldn't eat it, but I keep doing it.” Often, it's uttered with a hefty dose of shame and guilt.
And I get it because I was there. I even wrote a book called Cookie Dough in the Dark ….. and the dark represents the shame I felt.
What I realized for myself is that you don’t have to live without sugar. When you understand that eating sugar is a normal part of being human you can stop being so mean to yourself for eating it.
Craving sugar and overeating sugar is a symptom of something else. And we either don’t know that or we don’t know how to deal with the deeper issues.
Most women's gut reaction is to cut sugar out COMPLETELY or do a drastic sugar detox, but those things actually make your sugar cravings WORSE in the long run.
Let me ask you this...
Are you really willing to live a life without sugar for the rest of your life?
I know that I wasn’t, but it seemed easier to try and get rid of it rather than dealing with WHY I was eating copious amounts of it.
I know through my journey of losing weight and getting a grip on my emotional eating that a life without sugar is not what I wanted. I actually enjoy eating dessert and baking.
As a result, I teach women long-term strategies to lose weight and handle their emotional eating. Ask yourself, if you’re going to give sugar up, do you see yourself giving it up for good?
After my own soul-searching, I knew sugar wasn’t the problem. And I began to peel back the onion layers!! I began to get to the root cause. Remember that the way you lose your weight is how you will live your life, so...
If you're not willing to cut sugar out permanently then doing it temporarily is a sign of impatience and desperation.
How about we fix what's causing the sugar cravings in the first place?
Root cause is something I talk a lot about with female clients in my Vibrant Living membership.
Because if we don't get to the root cause, how can we fix the real problem?
Doing a drastic detox, challenge or some other weird thing like swapping a Paleo cookie for a real one doesn't fix the real problem.
Again, it's impatience and desperation.
Sugar cravings are always a symptom of other problems.
Let's fix the real problems so you can enjoy sugar without beating yourself up!
Generally, sugar cravings always stem from more than one thing.
And in my experience, it's never just one thing.
It's always a combination of things.
1) Not balancing your meals properly to support your blood sugar levels
2) Not eating enough food during the day
3) How you deal with stress – it’s always going to be around, how do you deal with stress without grabbing a sugary snack to soothe you (i.e. sugary snack is alcohol, bread, pasta, chips, popcorn, pop, crackers etc.) We have not been taught to deal with negativity and discomfort so we tend to eat our feelings.
5) Thinking that you have to be perfect
Sugar cravings are a result of your mindset, not a meal plan!!
