Love Your Teeth and Gums

So many of the health topics that I share you with, my clients, my friends & family are typically not discussed in mainstream media.

 

I’ve been chatting about GMO’s in my classes for about 15 years.

 

I’ve been ridiculed for oil pulling as a way to naturally whiten my teeth and using products that are not conventional such as essential oils, a super amazing floss and clay.

 

I’ve been ridiculed for saying that genetics only counts for about 5%-10% of your issues while your lifestyle accounts for 80+% …yeah, really, check it out - it's called epigenetics! And read about it in my book, Cookie Dough in the Dark.

 

So, today, this `Cool Healthy Chick` is talking about teeth, and yes, I was made fun of because when I was doing it, it wasn`t the `norm`.

 

People snickered behind my back, `crazy girl…cookoo`.

 

But whatever.

 

Today, I have better teeth than I had 15 years ago.

 

My dentist still suggests I use `dentist recommended` toothpaste.

 

Yah, no thanks!

 

Since I`ve switched to more natural tooth products, the health of my teeth have changed.

 

Since I started using Juice Plus+ my teeth and gums have improved.

 

Why?

For about 15 years I have been improving my teeth health.

 

Why, because your teeth reveal a lot about your health. As Trina Felber says, "Your mouth is not Vegas!  What happens inside your mouth does not stay in your mouth... it travels everywhere in your body!"

When I was 16 I was bulimic until I learned it rots your teeth because of the acids and stopped immediately. You can read more about that and more in Cookie Dough in the Dark - my raw and vulnerable story about overeating sugar and what I thought was a healthy diet.

I brushed too hard growing up (oh & to be honest still have to practice slowing down) because I felt the harder I brushed the more it helped my teeth get the sugar off).

Dentists always told me to keep brushing and flossing, yup, I do that, but they never told me how your diet affects your teeth because your blood feeds your teeth through your nerves and affects your health. 

It wasn't until I read Holistic Dental Care by Nadine Armetis from Living Libations (where I get the best floss from! plus Happy Gums and Yogi Tooth Serum) about 15 years ago that I really understood what happens in my mouth and how that affects my health. I have used all of her products since that day and my teeth thank me for it. I'd be happy to share my favourites with you.


In 2018 one of my molars broke in half (caused by a fine crack when I fell off my bike years before that), so I had to get that sorted and also had a cavity. When I was going through this dental journey, I unfortunately experienced "after pain" which lasted for months and it took going to see specialists to see what we could find out about this periodic shooting pain, which showed nothing in particular and luckily after almost 1.5 years disappeared - touch wood!

I really want to save my teeth from falling out, my gums from receding further and also keeping my mouth the healthiest it can be because your mouth is your front door. Open wide and exposure to bacteria, viruses and fungus are all around. Once inside your mouth… the party begins. Your mouth is connected to your nose and sinuses. The bacterial or viral party inside your mouth travels to your nose and mouth causing frequent sinus infections and cold/flu infestations. Therefore besides avoiding any dental work, I want to protect my mouth and teeth by supporting my saliva - which is a super important bodily fluid!

 

Helpful Tips...

 

 

Get Your Greens:

By adding cruciferous (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, kale, etc.) veggies into your daily diet you can significantly reduce your toxic load (remember your blood supplies life (or rots) to your teeth). 

 

Not getting your 13 minimum daily servings of fruits, veggies and berries - here is the simple shift I use daily to bridge the gap.

Your mouth is connected to your nose, sinuses, lungs and gut.  If the bacteria inside your mouth is not healthy, and you suffer from frequent sinus infections and colds, it's likely that your mouth is the culprit making you sick. It's so much more than picking our the right toothpaste!!

In 2018, I stumbled across Trina Felber, a registered nurse, passionate about improving her family's health. She started Primal Life Organics and I am in love with her products and her information/education!

 

While also still using Yogi Tooth Serum, Happy Gums, copper Tongue Scraper and the best floss ever from Living Libations , plus my daily dose of Juice Plus+ and Juice Plus+ omegas (ask about kids free), I have added Primal Life Organic's Clay toothpaste, Dirty Mouth Toothpowder and Dirty Mouth Gum Serum because these are the best I have found on the market. 

 

Signs your mouth is in trouble:

 

Red and tender gums? 

Inflamed and bleeding gums are an open door for bacteria and viruses to travel directly into the bloodstream for internal invasion. Strong health gums are a strong defense against internal invasion.


Bad Breath? 

This signals you have an overgrowth of the bad bacteria… which creates acids to support their survival. Exposure to viruses, sugary food, alcohol-based mouthwashes, peroxide and other harsh toothpaste ingredients can increase acidity in the mouth, strengthen the infestation and weaken your immunity and defense.


Plaque buildup? 

Proof your mouth environment supports the wrong microbiome.
Tongue coated with white? Bacteria and acids are coating your tongue, strengthening the virus, and destroying your immune system.


Dry mouth? 

Your saliva is what protects your mouth 24 hours a day. It contains all the essentials to protect your entire mouth and your immune system: digestive enzymes, immune proteins, minerals, and acid-neutralizing properties. Less than optimal saliva creates a weakness in your defense against viral invasion.

The best defense against infections, including the common cold and flu virus, is a healthy mouth with healthy saliva production.

 

You should develop the healthy habit of brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day. However, brushing with the wrong products can make you sick by destroying your natural protection your mouth was designed to offer and leaves your front door wide open!

 

Brush Your Teeth with the Right Products

According to Trina, your Daily Routine should support a healthy mouth microbiome and saliva protection.

 

Dental products that will help prevent bacteria and viruses from surviving inside your mouth must be:

  • Alkaline
  • Mineral-rich (paste or powder)
  • Detoxifying

 

Alkaline toothpaste or powder:

  • cleans teeth and gum tissue
  • supports the growth of healthy bacteria, reduces the risk of disease-causing viruses and bacteria
  • destroys plaque
  • allows minerals to go back into the enamel
  • enables your saliva to protect you 24-hours a day
  • supports gum health

 

Mineral-rich toothpaste or powder:

  • provides the minerals that are essential for strong, cavity resistant teeth
  • thickens the enamel for whiter teeth

 

Detoxifying with a blend of clay/charcoal:

  • removes toxins (such as heavy metals and bacteria) from the gum tissue and mouth tissue
  • dissolves plaque quickly
  • prevents plaque formation
  • removes surface stains and whitens teeth

Saliva contains calcium and phosphorus that your teeth absorb. It also functions as an overall lubricant for the mouth, preventing food from sticking to your teeth and gums.

 

Saliva contains antibacterial and antiviral proteins to kill pathogens before they enter your body! This brings new meaning to the phrase “good health begins inside your mouth”!

 

Through the day, your mouth is detecting and analyzing viruses, bacteria, pollen, food, and toxins before they enter the rest of the body.

This means your mouth is a war zone of good and bad bacteria.

And if you have more bad (pathogenic) bacteria in your mouth than good, your immune system can be fatally compromised.

 

The secret to a healthy mouth is in your saliva. 

 

What you brush your teeth with makes a HUGE difference in how well your saliva can protect you. Brushing with the wrong products (triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, glycerin, artificial ingredients) can prevent your saliva from doing its job.

 

A healthy habit is to brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. But what about the other 23 hours and 50 minutes of every day?

Keep your saliva healthy and your mouth will be more resistant to cavities, gum disease, viruses, bacteria, and your internal health will also improve. Healthy saliva and a healthy mouth is the root cause of good health!!

 

Healthy saliva contains minerals, digestive enzymes (yes, digestion and immunity start inside your mouth), and antiviral/antibacterial proteins.

 

Here are a few suggestions for maintaining healthy saliva:

 

Take your Juice Plus+ whole food nutrition!

If your body is mineral-depleted, your saliva will also be depleted of the minerals that keep your teeth healthy. 


Keep your gut healthy by taking probiotics. 

A healthy gut will absorb nutrients from supplements and foods instead of passing them through your body which will keep your saliva healthy.


Avoid caffeine. 

Caffeinated beverages can be dehydrating. Studies have found that drinking caffeinated coffee or tea causes dry mouth.


Limit alcohol use.

Stop smoking. 

Smoking tobacco can also dehydrate. Cutting down or quitting may reduce dry mouth symptoms.

 

Drop sugar. 

Like caffeine, alcohol, and smoking, sugar can dehydrate you. If you can, try cutting down on sugary foods and beverages (including kombucha) to reduce dry mouth problems. By keeping your mouth healthy and your saliva flowing, you have a chance to prevent a viral invasion. The common cold and flu viruses are only a threat if your immune system is compromised. Since you now know your immune system starts inside your mouth, protect your gatekeeper with the right oral wellness protocol.

 

Boost Your Immune System

Boosting your immune system will help prevent you from getting sick when exposed to viruses that cause the common cold and flu.

 

And that can be as easy as changing the way you brush your teeth – seriously!
